Nightfall, a luxurious mix of beauty & pleasure
Let's remake love: "We are the new erotics"
Nightfall is a proposal: The New Erotics; it takes erotica in a new and distinct direction, inspired by the sensitivity, abandon, and richness of subcultures, such as The New Romantics clique of 1980s London. Similarly, references to art and literature from previous centuries comingle with the avant-garde, creating a multilayered language with its own sense of depth and history, hitting a perfect note between sensual unruliness and stunning attention to detail.
The erotic exists, necessarily, within a context: sensorial textures amount to moments, reliant on gestures, expressions, history, architecture — in a word, fashion. In this way, fashion is inextricable from the act of seduction. With Nightfall, a self-designed line of sex toys by AF Vandevorst’s Filip Arickx, inventive objects act as prisms for intimate exchanges. They propose that when every aspect of sex is desirable, pleasure becomes exponentially more enjoyable.
Inspired by the rituals of passionate couples, each luxe item is made to intensify anyone’s fulfillment, as well as to exist as objet d’art, because, as part of the erotic’s context, visual desirability is as essential as physical touch. A fresh, disruptive form of luxury is achieved, one that matches a surface-level satisfaction with the deepest of pleasures, infusing the body with opulence.
Filip and A started AF Vandevorst in 1998, partially as an exploration of desire through fashion. Today, the couple has decided to try their hands at divergent disciplines, proving that they can surprise themselves (and one another) after almost three decades as partners.
Each is still interested in articulating desire’s double-edge, its teetering balance of safety and risk. An is Nightfall’s sound curator and has created a series of videos based on arousal, illustrating the tensions present in the new Nightfall collection: soft and rigid, cool and hot, anticipatory and in motion, transparent and opaque. Filip has himself designed each toy and art-directed its presentation.
Nightfall toys come in collectible packages, built like smuggler books so they can be proudly displayed or discreetly shelved in a growing library. Each object comes with a unique ’zine of exclusive artworks, another chapter in its life as a luxury item intended for ultimate, multi-sensorial pleasure.
Among them, a solid glass dildo called HEAVEN suspends a peacock plume, a play on the vintage tickling apparatus. Orchids bloom inside GRACE, a vibrator made out of crystal-clear silicone on one end that fades into matte black on the other. (The clarity of this material is cutting-edge and uncommon in the world of sexual devices.) HOLY, a small glass plug sits neatly in a faceted glass orb, fitting in among the perfume bottles on one’s vanity, perhaps. RAVEN, a travel-sized glass vibrator in glossy black glass is poetic in its purity of form.
Nightfall is intended for collaboration, meaning the collections will involve other designers, artists, and protagonists. This intention is in keeping with a new conversation in erotica, one that places an importance on fashion and function. These toys, their surrounding ephemera, and a curation of erotic content stimulate in every sense of the word, creating a lush and clever scene within which desires are discovered, dissected, and met. They place an emphasis on the joy of pleasure — the true pleasure that is to be discovered when one experiences joy.
