Four Years after the coup: ‘A Sound for Myanmar’ amplifies Solidarity and Hope through Music
Brussels, February 1, 2025 – Four years after the military coup of February 1, 2021, Myanmar remains in the grip of a severe political, economic, and humanitarian crisis. As global attention wanes, the European Union (EU) aims to highlight the urgent needs of the Myanmar people through an innovative cultural initiative: ‘A Sound for Myanmar.’

This groundbreaking project brings together renowned European composer Lucas Vidal and talented Myanmar artists to create a powerful musical composition that transcends borders and divisions. By blending traditional Myanmar instruments and melodies with European musical sounds, the song serves as a poignant reminder of the shared human experiences that connect us all.
A Message of Solidarity and Awareness
‘A Sound for Myanmar’ reflects the EU’s steadfast commitment to standing with the people of Myanmar in these challenging times. The EU continues to work through the United Nations, international NGOs, and resilient local civil society organisations, prioritising peace and governance, human development and education, and sustainable economic growth.
The composition serves multiple purposes:
- Symbolising solidarity and mutual understanding between Europe and Myanmar, fostering cultural exchange and celebrating the resilience of Myanmar’s diverse communities.
- Raising awareness by using music as a universal language to engage audiences across Europe and beyond, drawing attention to the ongoing crisis and the pressing need for humanitarian and development support.
- Preserving cultural heritage, as the composition—crafted through collaboration between musicians from various ethnic backgrounds—showcases Myanmar’s rich musical traditions.
"Since the coup, the EU has committed over EUR 355 million to support the people of Myanmar, providing a vital lifeline amid the crisis. We continue to advocate for the preservation of jobs, particularly for women, and all our funding is channeled through trusted partners. However, a significant funding gap remains, requiring broader international support. This project is a testament to the enduring bonds of solidarity and the shared aspiration for peace and democracy, " says H.E. Ranieri Sabatucci, the EU Ambassador to Myanmar.
A Musical Journey
Drawing from Myanmar’s rich cultural tapestry, the composition features traditional instruments and melodies, reflecting the country’s pluralistic identities. The creative process involved meaningful exchanges between artists, bridging divides and demonstrating how culture can foster unity even in the face of adversity.
"The piece is a meeting point of past and present, East and West, tradition and experimentation. Ultimately, it symbolises the power of music to transcend borders and bring people together, even in times of uncertainty," says Lucas Vidal.
Join the event
On the 20th of February 2025, the EU invites cultural institutions, media, and humanitarian advocates to join the official release of 'A sound for Myanmar' in Brussels.
Let us unite through the universal language of music to support Myanmar’s journey toward peace and renewal during the event.

About Lucas Vidal
Lucas Vidal (born 1984) is a two time Goya Award winning Spanish composer, conductor, and record producer. Vidal became the youngest Berklee College of Music student ever to compose and record the score to a feature film with a full orchestra, and he is best known for composing the score for the 2013 film Fast & Furious 6.
In late 2024, an amendment to the Motion Picture Law was passed, tripling the maximum jail term for anyone who exports a film or screens it domestically without approval from censorship officials. This change further tightens restrictions on creative expression. Amid these constraints, it is encouraging that music remains a permitted art form, providing a vital outlet for artistic and personal expression.
